The Bathtub
A bathtub is simply a container used for holding water and allows the waste water to drain through the tub waste and overflow drain assembly.
Nearly all tubs will have a waste and overflow drain assembly, comprised of three primary components: the overflow pipe from the upper tub wall, the waste pipe from the main drain inlet opening, and some type of trip-waste mechanism.
The bathtub its self is one of the sturdiest fixtures and rarely has any problems. The tub is outfitted with a drain waste and overflow assembly. The waste and overflow assembly ensure that the water stays at a predetermined level when your bathtub fills with water. The trip lever or push-button stopper retains bath water and discharges the waste water when the trip mechanism is triggered.

The Waste and Overflow
The primary function of the waste and over flow is to prevent water from overflowing. The overflow is the hole near the top inner rim of the tub and it prevents water from running over the tub rim and flooding the bathroom. The waste and overflow allow water to overflow down the tub drain and by-passing the tub drain inlet when closed.
The waste and overflow are not without its problems. In fact, if there is a problem with the bathtub more and likely it's related to the waste and overflow.

Installing a waste and overflow is relatively a difficult project, accessing it is not all that simple. You may have to remove sections of the wall behind the tub and or the ceiling below it. In other cases, I will have to crawl under the home to replace the waste and overflow assembly.
Tub Drain Backup
The second issue with a bathtub is the standard slow drain or complete backup. Most backups are due to hair clumped-up in the drain or waste and overflow fitting.
To keep your tub drains flowing freely, we recommend:
-
Keeping the drains screen on the drain at all times
-
Clean the drain when hair build up in the Strainer and Tub Shoe
-
Do not use chemicals to clear a slow drain
The end of the waste and overflow assembly will connect to the drain line itself and will generally have a trap that prevents sewer gases from leaking into the bathroom. In modern tubs, a P-trap is usually incorporated into the drain line below the tub rendering the tub drain inaccessible for snaking when the drain is clogged. Instead, we unscrew the overflow plate and remove the trip lever mechanism to clear the tub drain with an electric snake.
